Walk and Save Money

The best thing about walking is that it’s free.  You don’t need lots of specialist equipment or an expensive gym membership if you want to get fit.  Walking is also a great way to get from A to B for free.

You don’t need an expensive gym membership to improve your health

People find the expense of joining a gym and paying for classes, coupled with a busy lifestyle, the biggest barriers to participating in regular exercise. One fifth of gym members attend just once a month or less, and many cancel their memberships after rarely using them.

But you don’t need to pay any memberships to go walking, or make a special trip to a gym or leisure centre: you can get more active simply by stepping outside your own front door at a time that suits you, for free. You can also enjoy a variety of outdoor surroundings as you get fit.

You don’t need lots of expensive equipment or training to go walking

Nearly everyone can walk naturally, without having to be taught. You can take short walks on streets and easy paths in urban areas, parks and lowland countryside with just ordinary warm, comfortable clothing and a pair of good shoes or trainers.

There’s lots of practical walking information on our website to help you get started.

Walking is a free way of getting from A to B

Of course it’s slower than most other options, but it might be quicker than you think, especially if you take into account all the other factors that make up your journey.

We tend to over-estimate the speed of a car or bus journey, and under-estimate how quickly we walk. Add in the time spent parking the car or waiting for a bus, and the fact that walkers are rarely slowed by congestion or road works, walking is often the best choice for short trips
